Rest, Share, Practice, Prepare : Outdoor Survival Skill Share

For Black Indiana Families, Loved Ones & Kin

In Fall 2020, this experience offered a Black affinity space to : Demonstrate skills. Plan with community. Practice technique. Heal ongoing and historic land trauma. Rest with emotional confidence.

This Black gathering amplified community in – teaching each other, trying new things and asking questions based on Black communal outdoor knowledge of caring for land and loved ones. In addition, to affirm the emotional wellness, community safety and talents of Black families, it was also hosted in a Black neighborhood, by a Black owned business on Black owned land.

Available topics for conversation and practice : pitching a tent, planting, fishing, farming, foraging and hunting food, clothes, comfort, accessibility, awareness, body care and safety, survival 1st aid, caring for families outdoors, understanding birds, animals, insects, using ones 5 senses and intuition in nature, survival tools, suggested supplies, resources, media and materials for learning, communication techniques and staying internally and externally connected / emotionally grounded during crisis, survival and emergency.

Rest, Share, Practice and Prepare, outdoor survival skill share was designed to support Black community of all ages (elders and children). It addition it’s planning considered genders, backgrounds, romance and family types, incomes, faiths, body types and skill levels to feel comfortable, welcome, confident and cared for outdoors. Black people with no “outdoor experience” were centered and practice and progress were celebrated , not perfection.
